AUTUMN STYLE UPDATE

As March turns into April and summer starts to fade, add these items to your wardrobe to take you from cool summer style through autumn before you find yourself in warm winter woollies.

 1. A SCARF

Vary the weight of your scarf depending on the weather. A soft chiffon or silk will keep off just a hint of a breeze while a chunky knit can transform a summer dress into a winter wardrobe staple.

2. BOOTS

Ankle boots immediately up the ante on any outfit and keep you cosy. Go knee length on really cold days. Ensure they are in good nick and not too high in the heel.

3. A CARDIGAN

This versatile item is a must for a corporate wardrobe. A bright colour can transform a neutral dress or pants and a bold pattern makes a statement. In autumn, a cardie will ensure that you’re warm on a chilly morning and cool when the heat turns up later in the day. Wear it with the buttons done or undone for a completely different look.

4. A POLO-NECK

This item is your secret weapon to wearing your strappy summer dresses for longer. Layer one under a dress with thin straps to make it office-ready on a cool day. A polo-neck also looks great paired with smart pants and a blazer for colder winter days so it’s worth the investment.

5. PUMPS OR MULES

Replace your trusty summer sandals with a pair of ballet pumps or backless mules (bang on trend for 2018, to keep your tootsies snug this autumn. They look just as good with stockings or tights so they’ll see you through winter, too.

6. TIGHTS OR LEGGINGS

A pair of tights or leggings is another way to get more miles from your dresses. Just throw on a pair under your favourite and you’ll be ready to brave the cooler weather.

7. A TRENCH COAT

Contemporary and lightweight, the trench was made for transitional dressing. Wear it over a dress or a blouse and skirt to keep you warm until the temperature heats up at midday. Choose a classic khaki to make it really versatile.

8. A LIGHT SWEATER

A round or V-neck sweater in a lightweight knit fabric is perfect for layering over a collared shirt and can be easily slipped off it you feel too warm. Just make sure it’s on the slightly larger side to avoid creasing the shirt too much.

9. A LONG-SLEEVE DRESS

A great transitional piece, a long-sleeve dress will keep the chill at bay without making you feel overdressed if the mercury rises a bit.

10. A PUSSY-BOW BLOUSE

The high neck on a pussy-bow blouse keeps the cold out but the fact that they are generally made from light weight fabrics means that you won’t be sweltering as a result.
